Like most people, you probably are anxious to use your new printing supplies if printing from home is a new convenience. You probably purchased your Brother Ink Cartridge in the hope that it will provide you with flawless prints that perhaps even look better than the prints you were able to get when you outsourced your printing needs. However, encountering smeared ink or toner is a common complaint, even if you are using the latest LaserJet printer. The problem does not necessarily involve your printer, or even your supplies. However, there is some basic troubleshooting that you can perform to make sure that your printer is going to stop smearing.

First, double check to make sure that your Brother Toner is meant to go with your printer. Printers tend to malfunction if you pair them with products that are anything less than quality. This does not mean you have to buy direct from the manufacturer; in fact, many people see excellent results when they use remanufactured toner cartridges or off-brand ink. Though, you need to be careful if you want to experiment with other brands that vary from the printer itself. You should always evaluate whether or not the money you are saving by purchasing the off-brand toner is worth it when you see smears that might otherwise be avoided if you bought the proper supplies.

Another option would be to adjust your printer preferences. Adjust the paper type to a heavy gauge such as “card stock.” This is going to make the printer function at a slower rate. Thus, the material will have more exposure to the fuser that applies the ink. This is going to prove to be helpful if you are trying to print something complex; speed will not be one of your main points of concern. Rather, you will be more concerned with whether or not the intricate design maintains its appearance as it is transferred onto the printing medium.

A simple and easy fix to smearing could also involve removing the cartridge and shaking it gently back and forth. This is going to spread the toner within the cartridge, thus resulting in a print that is of higher quality. Or, you could remove the cartridge and replace it with a new one. Sometimes, if you ignore the indicator lights that tell you when toner or ink are running low, this is going to cause the remainder of the ink to smear when it is applied.
Once you have gone through all of these steps, a last resort is to replace the fuser. In rare cases, taking the printer into a repair shop is also an option. However, most problems can be solved by people using the printer, and do not require professional assistance.

Clear, professional printing should always be your goal. Smeared ink is not only annoying, but it could also cost you a sale if you are counting on your printed documents to reflect your professional values and commitment to excellence. So, before ever giving someone a document that is anything less than perfect, it is best to attempt to fix the problems your printer is having by following the aforementioned steps. Plus, if you are able to fix your printing issues on your own, you will also be saving a substantial amount of money in the long run. Avoid routine maintenance or potential problems by caring for your printer and making sure that you are using it with the best supplies possible. You will feel more confident when you print if you know that smudged lines or illegible text are no longer going to be issues when you print.
